T'ai Chi at Tippe's Living Waters!

New beginners class starting!
Join us Monday evenings 7:00 to 8:30pm starting January 4th
for this 6-weeks series...and on-going!
$12 per class

What is t'ai chi?
     What type is being taught?
          Who is our teacher?

Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese practice designed to activate the body’s own inherent nature for health using form and principles based on Chinese medicine and philosophy. As a formula for aligning with the very framework of life at its core, Tai Chi Chuan utilizes scientific knowledge and theory as well as cultural experience handed down from generation to generation. In this six weeks course, learn the beginning movements of the Tai Chi Chuan Yang’s Style-Short form and refine your skills of ‘true balance’- generating a deep relaxation within that awakens inner strength, focus, and vision. Moderate movements performed slowly and continuously. Wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing, and flat-soled shoes. The first class is an introductory workshop offering foundational information helpful in understanding concepts and form mechanics. The remaining classes continue to develop skills in balance, coordination, and fluidity of movement.

About the Instructor: Christine Grimm
Over 25 years experience, with 10 years teaching. Started instruction at the age of 18 at the Tai Chi Chuan Center of Milwaukee, and continued there learning with push hands, sword, staff, Pa-Kua, Peter Ralston’s Cheng Hsin, and other self-defense techniques.  Started teaching form & principles in 1999 through a church that was pioneering a healing ministry, and has continued teaching with a health focus. At 19 years old, overcame Hodgkin’s Disease and incorporates insights gained from her recovery, as well as her lifelong health management into her classes; offering a unique perspective on health with a fresh look into the Tai Chi Chuan form as a healing tool.   Now, Christine is delighted to be a part of the Living Waters healing team!

See you in the Garden!

 Topics Covered:
1. What's Eating America: Given the array of food choices and advice, eating in modern industrial society can be wrought with confusion, contradictions and anxiety.  Session One considers the effects of modern industrial eating habits on culture, society and ecological systems.

2. Anonymous Food:  Session Two traces the historical shift from family farms to industrial agriculture to present day questions surrounding genetically modified organisms (GMO) and industrial organics.  The session examines the ecological and economic impacts that have accompanied the changes in how we grow and prepare food.

3. Farming for the Future:  Session Three explores emerging food system alternatives, highlighting sustainable growing practices and the benefits of small farms and urban food production.  The session considers how individuals can make choices that lead to a more sustainable food supply.

4. You Are What You Eat: Session Four explores food systems from a human health perspective.  The session considers the influences that shape our choices and food policies from the fields to Capitol Hill, and the implications for our health and well-being.

 5. Toward a Just Food System:  The readings in Session Five examine issues of hunger, equity, and Fair Trade.  The session considers the role that governments, communities and individuals can play in addressing these issues to create a more just food system.

 6.  Choices for Change: Individuals and communities are discovering the benefits of choosing local, seasonal and sustainably grown and produced foods.  Session Six offers inspiration and practical advice in taking steps to create more sustainable food systems.

An Enrichment Opportunity
for those Practicing The Art of Spiritual Direction….

The Art of Civility
Clarity is Found in the Conversation of Three

“Whatever the reason, there is a widespread perception that (in America) we have become a ruder, less caring, less connected, less civil society . . . Most Americans see a decline of basic civility on the airwaves, in music, on the streets and public spaces, in public institutions such as schools, and on our nation’s highways.”      Laura Pappano

Who teaches and mentors the innate human character of civility?

It is those who work with children and youth; those who truth-speak in family and social networks; those who lead institutions and organizations; those who listen and guide through spiritual direction.  Each holds a responsibility.  Is it possible to identify Jesus as a teacher and mentor of civility?  How does our Christian faith prepare us to speak and act in a civil manner?  Themes of ‘love your neighbor’, ‘speak truth with love’, ‘do good to those who wrong us’, ‘ all people are made in the image of God’ are challenged in the everyday world of hurt, blame, and fear.  As spiritual directors how do we listen, teach and mentor in The Art of Civility?

Ayurveda:  Healthy Living as Spiritual Practice
Thursday nights Oct. 21, 28, Nov. 4 - 6:30 to 8:00pm
Guided by Judith Kubish

Intuitively we know that our physical, mental, and spiritual health are interconnected.  However, we often view them separately and approach “issues” in any one area as distinct from the others. In these sessions we will explore three principles from the ancient philosophy and medical system of Ayurveda:  Inner Medicine, unique metabolic constitution, and life in balance.  We will apply them to our own experience as both daily spiritual practices and guidelines for healthy living.

Suggested offering $15 evening, $40 if paid in advance
All offerings wonder-full-y valued...please come!

Living Waters excited to host its first conversation...
Just For Men... A Conversation:
Civility in The Midst of Conflict
Saturday February 7th, 2009 10am-3pm
Led by:  Don Mendenhall
Life Coach, Artist, Church Consultant
Conflict and misunderstanding is part
of the human condition
in relationship to others. It is when conflict
becomes destructive
and alienating that lives and community
well-being
become untenable.
This time apart for the men
offers opportunity to be in conversation
about conflict in our lives.
An older term, that may well bring
a renewed understanding
of conflict and dis-agreement within the lives
of individuals, families,
work settings, and yes,
even congregations, is the concept of civility.
In the midst of even severe disagreement
simply being civil
can prevent the heartache
of destructive conflict.
This gathering was part of the living legacy
of Don Buck's ministry and personal commitment
to spirituality and well-being...Gathered in his honor.

Don't miss it!
First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom
Featuring John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg

Why did Jesus happen when he happened? Why the tiny villages around the Lake?
Why the confrontations in Jerusalem? Why then? Why there?

Why were the titles of Caesar Augustus -- Divine, Son of God, God from God,

Lord, Redeemer, Liberator, and Savior of the World -- taken from a Roman emperor

on the Palatine hill and given to a Jewish peasant on the Palestine plain?

Was it low lampoon or high treason? Either way, the Romans were not laughing.

What were the priorities of Jesus' proclamation of the Kingdom?

How was the status quo of Roman imperial theology subverted

by this obscure Galilean whose message continues to indict empire today?

Introduction to EFT: Try It on Everything!
“The Revolution Starts Within”

September 19, 26, October 3

Facilitated by Arleen Hollenhorst, RN, HN-BC, CEH

All are welcome to join us as we learn and practice this simple and effective technique! Research and personal experience show great results in releasing pain, anxiety, stress, guilt, grief, depression and a host of other issues too numerous to mention here.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a form of psychological acupuncture that uses light tapping with your finger tips instead of inserting needles to stimulate traditional Chinese acupuncture points. Tapping on these designated points on the face and body is combined with verbalizing the identified problem followed by an affirmation phrase. This balances the energy system and can relieve emotional and physical discomfort in minutes.

In between these 3 weekly sessions, you will be able to practice, notice your outcomes, come back to share your questions and insights and then explore further.

"Way of Torture, Way of the Cross"
November 2 & 9, 2008...a study-action course developed by Wisconsin Council of Churches and NRCAT, facilitated by our Pastor Karen

Sadly, we live in difficult and dangerous times.  We face a challenge today that raises profound questions about our very identity and integrity as Christians and as Americans....as torture continues to be part of a national and worldwide strategy to address "threat". This study hopes to challenge us to integrate faith with life and pushes us to think deeply about how faith in Jesus Christ makes a difference in who we are and how we act in the world. Recently, the PCUSA went on record taking a stand against the use of torture and Tippe took a stand last June.

Lenten Worship 2008
“Walking The Garden As Families”
God the Creator creates out of love,
through families.
And when that love gets hung up,
through marital affairs,
in kicking family members out
of the family, stopping our Creator's flow of love
 through the family,
injustices towards others--
then dysfunction occurs---
and even gets passed on from one
generation to the next,
out of our unconscious loyalty to try
healing past generations'
--our ancestors' –mistakes….
alcoholism,
power trips
